Our Mission
Provide people with diabetes instant access to health & nutritional advice alongside their existing apps, care networks, and devices.
Back in 2003, our founder's older brother's life changed forever. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Over the years, the two of them had studied the best tools and resources available. Often they found themselves frustrated. Most of what existed did not interoperate well. Until recently, with efforts like #WeAreNotWaiting, the device and health system a person with diabetes used made it difficult to adopt the latest advances in technology available to people with diabetes. Many mobile apps, websites, and AI algorithms have been created for diabetics, but very few of the offerings work well with one another. Our mission is to shift this paradigm. Brightspots is building software that integrates the sea of available resources and allows you to share, chat, and video call securely with those who can help people with diabetes live their healthiest lives. Most of the tools and resources are available out there; they need to be unleashed and brought together for wholistic diabetes management.
Our Story
On a journey to understand nutrition and health tracking for diabetics.
Our founder's older brother has always been a very active and athletic individual. He must continuously work on tuning his blood sugars following his active lifestyle, from tearing up the basketball court to competing in triathlons in LA.
Until recently, he attempted to manage his diabetes while maintaining a relatively normal diet. He did not eat poorly by non-diabetic standards - consuming a healthy level of fruits and vegetables with the occasional carb-based snack. As he aged, he noticed that it was harder to keep off weight, maintain a healthy A1c, sleep well, and overall live his daily life without feeling under the weather at least once per day. On December 28th, 2018, he started on a journey to drastically change his diet and lifestyle.
After reading books such as Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions, he has followed a low-carb diet and lifestyle. This diet and lifestyle change has had a profound impact on his life and his diabetes.
We want to make our founder's brother's story, and those like it, more accessible to more people with diabetes. We want to build tools that help others find their healthy diabetes lifestyle through the power of community, diet, and data.
Every person with diabetes has to spend significant time daily learning about their bodies. What works for them depends on a myriad of factors. We understand this well. That is why we want to make it easier for people with diabetes to take the data they have tracked and share it with their community, including nutritionists, doctors, health coaches, and family. Streamlining this communication channel, backed with a diabetic's real data, can help more people find the lifestyle support and change that our founder's brother has experienced.
